Warm nights, festive occasions and the race that stops the nation…there is no denying that the party season is finally upon us. Perhaps one of the most exciting times of the year for any fashionista, but which can also be equally as daunting, is when looking through your wardrobe for the perfect dress to wear. While the party season calls for endless clothing options, it’s important to start with one dress that you know will take you anywhere.
In this week’s post, I started off by investing in one party dress that would provide the most versatility for my wardrobe. And yes, you can wear it on multiple occasions. Starting with the biggest event, the Melbourne Cup, to lunches, work Christmas parties and almost any occasion which takes you from day to night.
With an onslaught of bright colours rapidly appearing in the boutiques and chain stores, it is evident that the trending colour palette for the Summer ‘17 season is going to consist of a lot of bright colours. Specifically, striking shades of yellow, pink and red all seem to be dominating collections. The latest store window displays in Australian retailer Witchery, boasted an electric combination of fuschia pink and red pieces teamed together, an unlikely combination which would have been deemed a ‘fashion crime’ now a trend that is embraced and promoted.
While brights are a great option and certainly can enhance most wardrobes, when looking for an ‘investment’ dress, it is slightly wiser and more budget friendly to opt for the faithful combination of monochrome. I’m sure that as the party season progresses, I will still love to grab a bright piece, so stay tuned for that post. The benefit of the monochrome combination is that it can accommodate most budgets and unlike a spectacular yellow dress, it will give you a lot more versatility and mileage. Let’s face it, people might instantly remember a bright outfit, however the classic black and white combination stands the test of time just a little better, thus making it easier to wear multiple times without being labelled a ‘repeat offender’.
The dress that I am wearing is available from dotti. The black trimming detail on the dress helps to add a touch of interest, giving the dress another dimension to my wardrobe and makes it stand apart from the other white dresses that I already own. You will also notice that the black tie belt on the dress provides a polished finish and creates the illusion of balancing the upper and lower body. The unique style of the sleeves and touch of ruffles gives the dress a playful edge.
In terms of styling this look with accessories, there really is a lot of room for fun and creativity. For example, to give the dress a casual feel swap the black fabric belt for a tan leather belt, pair it with a tan wedge and clutch for an effortless lunch look. The introduction of the pop of tan helps to make the outfit versatile yet will still compliment the black trimming. To dress the look even further for a night occasion, try introducing a black patent belt and black pumps for an alternative.
Accessories can easily be worked into the look anyway you like. For a bold edge try pairing a fuschia pink clutch with matching pink heels for something completely different. Take advantage of the bright trends and be extra adventurous with accessories. I kept this look on the neutral side with a tan clutch and a pair of nude diamante heels. For a Melbourne Cup look, simply add a fascinator and you’re ready to go!
