One of the most popular trends that debuted on runways in 2016 was the pleated midi skirt. Originally worn in previous eras, dating way back to the 50’s the pleated midi skirt made a return and is still going strong in 2017. With various celebrities such as Victoria Beckham embracing this trend and not to mention countless fashion bloggers, the pleated midi skirt is fast becoming a wardrobe staple. If not for the endless versatility or comfortable fit, the longer length skirt provides a nice change from shorter, fitted styles. In this week’s blog post I’m road testing this trend and have recreated a look that will take me from day to night.
Whether you already own a pleated skirt or are looking to invest in this on-trend piece, it’s worth trying on a range of different styles before settling for one. Currently the latest colours that are popular are the metallics, eg silver, gold. Not exactly for the faint hearted, but which look great with a range of looks, the metallics make a great option if you are looking to make a fashion statement.
Keeping it a little more safe, I decided to opt for black as it will be able to compliment almost everything in my wardrobe (the skirt I am wearing in the images is currently available from Bohoo.com). Also be aware that when you are trying on different styles each skirt will sit differently on the body, depending on the fabric and length.
To create a look that was going to be able to take me from day to night, I opted for a black detailed wrap crossover knit top to team with my pleated skirt. The almost unofficial uniform of all, black, helps to keep the look dressier and polished.
If you feel more adventurous for a day look, try teaming an oversized jumper and pair of white sneakers with your pleated midi for some serious chic street style. With the cooler weather now in full force, knits and bomber jackets are great choices to pair with your pleated skirt, as that way you get the most mileage out of your skirt and which you can wear in all seasons.
Accessories played a fairly minimal role in this particular look, but always feel free to experiment. I deliberately kept the look minimal and opted for a pair of suede ankle boots to wear with the skirt. Both heels and flats will compliment your skirt, so it’s entirely personal as to which you prefer.
For a pop of colour, I chose a bright red lipstick and nail polish to add just a touch of colour to the outfit. The combination of red and black will give your outfit a touch of glam. Next time you’re looking to invest in an on-trend piece, don’t be afraid to try the pleated midi skirt.
