Monochrome: Summer Style

With the start of Summer officially under a week away, I find myself contemplating the pieces my Summer wardrobe will consist of and one specific item that comes to mind are shorts. Next to dresses, shorts make up a wide part of my Summer wardrobe and I’m forever collecting pairs in different fabrics and cuts. In this week’s post I am going to share with you my most coveted combination of monochrome (Summer style) and share with you some tips about how to re-create this look.

To replicate this look, start with a pair of high-waisted black shorts. (The pair I am wearing is available from Witchery). The classic cut of a structured, high-waisted short means that your pair will always look flattering, which makes it easier to wear as an all day outfit. Compared with most other styles the high-waisted short gives a very polished finish and is the most versatile kind of short, which gives you an array of outfit combinations.

When looking to invest in either one or multiple pairs of shorts, consider the colour palette in your wardrobe and determine what will compliment your existing pieces. In the instance that you own a lot of darker tops then consider a white or cream short for some variety. However, I opted for black as it will give me the most mileage and can easily be mixed and matched.

In terms of determining which tops to team with your shorts, think off-the-shoulder for instant on-trend style. This off-the-shoulder trend is certainly having it’s IT moment this season, so take full advantage and think about investing in at least one top to carry you through the Summer. (The top I am wearing is available from Dotti). Other styles of tops to consider that will work well teamed with shorts, include the cold shoulder top and chambray/denim shirts. These look very chic tucked into a pair of high-waisted shorts teamed with sneakers and cropped tops also work well with shorts.

When wearing shorts, it cannot be emphasised enough just how much your shoes will set the tone for the whole look. Carefully consider which shoe to team with your look based on the purpose and occasion. I decided to opt for a high wedge with this look to give the outfit an overall dressier feel. Flats such as sandals or sneakers will also work well, when you want to give your look a slightly more casual feel.

To finish off your look, team an assortment of different accessories for extra interest. Try introducing a rose gold trimmed statement cuff (as seen above, from Sportsgirl) which will add detail. On the other arm, team a pair of delicate thin bangles with a larger bangle (bangles in images from Mimco). The right accessories will help to bring your look together and add an extra element of style to the outfit.

If you opt to wear an off-the-shoulder top then decide against wearing a necklace as it can interfere with the neckline, and detract from the cut of the top. Finally introduce a quilted clutch bag with a chain strap for a touch of luxe. (The bag I am wearing in the images is from Kate Spade)
