Style Edit: Denim Shorts

Considered and deemed to be one of the IT items for the Spring/Summer 16 Season, denim shorts are back in full force this season and just happened to make the top of my Summer must-haves list! In previous seasons, I have generally opted for dresses and playsuits/jumpsuits, however with such a variety available in the stores, I thought it was time to embrace the trend and…..I couldn’t be happier!

In this week’s fashion post, I will show you one idea for wearing and styling denim shorts, and give you some tips on recreating different looks with the same pair of shorts. Firstly, when looking for the right pair of denim shorts  be prepared to try on a lot of different types, as each pair will vary in cuts as well as the fine detail. The pair that I am wearing is a high-waisted light, chambray-look short available from Dotti. Opting for a lighter denim may give you slightly more options when teaming your existing pieces with the shorts, and maintains a light Summer feel to your look. Other cuts of denim shorts include, cut-offs, low rise, boyfriend, mid-rise and various details which can include prints, distressed denim, rips and cut outs.

As I mentioned before, having a pair of denim shorts in your wardrobe can serve many different purposes and be styled specifically depending on the occasion. For example, team a nautical stripped t-shirt, white sneakers, and aviators with your shorts for a chic casual look. Or for a mod (Model Off Duty) look, team a white cotton shirt tucked into shorts and add a pair of gladiator sandals.

For the purpose of this post, I deliberately recreated a look that is still casual yet has a touch of effortless glam, which will take me from brunch through to late evening drinks and even dinner, obviously depending on the venue’s attire and dress code. Ensuring that I stayed with neutral shades, I opted for a beige linen wrap tie top from Kookai , this top also comes in white and black.

The combination of beige and light denim made for a fresh change and with a hint of black underneath complimented the overall look. (Note, the top is quite see-through due to the fabric of lines and may be fine to wear to a beachside venue but not always easy for lunch, so just team a white, nude or black singlet top underneath)

Accessories play a big part in bringing this look together so be sure to stay with neutral shades and tones. I opted for a suede stilletto sandal from ForeverNew, to add a slight touch of glam to the outfit, however there really are no rules when it comes to shoes.

Sneakers also look great and make for a chic combination when running errands..(literally!). Introduce a statement bag with your look for extra interest, styles such as the tote, (which I am wearing), cross body and bucket bags all work well, just be careful to stay within the lighter tones of the look. (Tan, nude & beige bags are great choices) Keep jewellery minimal, and only opt for accessories on the wrist, try a statement cuff, bangles or watches for some arm candy. Avoid wearing  necklaces, as they can often appear formal and therefore not complimenting the feel of the outfit.
